Parent Meeting Recap (Sept. 24, 2012)

Welcome to Sparkle Motion, the girls Ultimate Frisbee team at CHS!

A quick introduction to Ultimate: Ultimate was invented at CHS in 1968 in the student parking lot, catty-corner to Gleason's Dry Cleaners. Sparkle Motion, the girls team, was established later in the early 2000s.

The 2012-2013 Captains of Sparkle Motion are Maggie Woodruff, Aurora Rojer and Ellie Williams all class of 2013. Our coach is Patrick Morrisey, the father of 3 of CHS alumni who were also captains of their respective Ultimate teams at Columbia.

Spirit of the Game: ultimate is governed by a concept called spirit of the game (spirit).  Spirit essentially means sportsmanship: respecting your teammates, respecting your opponents and respecting yourself.  Ultimate is a unique sport in that there are no referees; players are responsible for monitoring their own behavior on and off of the field.  As a result, it is important that players are comfortable with the basic rules of ultimate (which can be found online or in the rulebook produced by USA Ultimate. More on getting a rule book below.) The team itself has few concrete rules beyond the governing rules of the sport, however these few rules we emphasize a lot. They are as follows:

1. Come to practice. This rule cannot be stressed enough. Unlike many school sports, we do not play games on a weekly basis. Instead, we attend weekend long tournaments, often times out of state. We need a lot of practice to win these tournaments, especially in the spring season when we attend big tournaments such as the Northeastern Championship. Additionally, our team is relatively small. The girls team does not have a JV or a feeder team as many local high school sports do, therefore the girls who come to practice are the girls who are on the team.  Without each player, we can't accomplish much. As captains, our main request is to come to practice, and while at practice, to focus on practice.

2. Communicate. As stated earlier, we are a small team. The more people we have at practice the better. We respect that you have prior commitments to honor, so in return we ask that you avoid making secondary commitments to the time you commit to us: Mon, Tues, Weds, Fri 3:45-6pm and the weekends we book for tournaments, fundraisers or
team bonding activities. However, we understand that sometimes things come up (eg  family emergencies, tutoring, jobs, other club responsibilities.) Our request is that you let us know ASAP (minimum +24 in advance) when you have a scheduling conflict. Everyone has them, especially seniors—just let us know in writing  (either by the GroupMe text messaging group (+1 (919) 617-7315) or by emailing us at chs.sparklemotion.com) when you cannot attend practice, tournaments, extra-events, etc.

3. Have fun. We all play Ultimate for one reason, to have fun. As Captains, we are working to not only organize practice and tournaments, but to keep our players safe and happy. Sometimes, the happy part might get sacrificed to keep everyone safe and the team
financially afloat.  If you are for some reason dissatisfied with the team, feel free to contact the captains via the team email or their personal emails. Parents, we ask that any requests, complaints or suggestions are sent to the team email (chs.sparklemotion@gmail.com)
so that they can be properly handled.

Finances:
Lisa Phillips briefly discussed finances for the team (which spends a little less than $20,000/year).  We've made the decision to not charge dues for the fall season and instead do our fundraising activities in the fall, and will charge our regular dues/fees when the spring season starts up (Parents meeting will happen sometime in February to begin that process).

USA Ultimate is the governing body of American Ultimate. To play in USA Ultimate-sanctioned tournaments (such as North Easterns, States, St. Johnsbury Invite, etc.) players need to have a USA Ultimate ID.  New players should register soon after Jan. 1.  Players who are renewing should register prior to Jan. 1 for a 2013 discount.  Registration can be found at https://members.usaultimate.org/members/login.php.
