Driving Information from Joyce
Hello all --for planning purposes, I just map quested locations....
Northeasterns (in South Portland, ME) is - -6 hours 11 minutes (no traffic)...or 6 1/2 hours...(about the same distance as St. Johnsbury, VT, for those who have made that trek)
PVPA is 3 hours and 45 minutes, regular traffic...and is in South Hadley, MA (just south of North Hampton, MA)
Amherst is about the same as PVPA, depending on traffic...3 1/2 - -3 hours 45 minutes...
All are each way - -
That's a LOT of time in the car for the month of May...
and right now, in DC, they have had 3" of snow and it's still falling!! Keep your fingers crossed - -pray --for warmer weather for the 22nd!!

Spring Parent's meeting notes
Notes from
Parents’ Meeting SPRING 2/24/2014
Captains: Sam F., Alexa J., Maggie H.
o
Ultimate is a very different sport in that there are no referees and girls
call their own fouls on the field.
o
There is an attitude of respect among players, within and between teams,
which is known as the “Spirit of the Game”.
o
The sport lends itself to team bonding where all players are encouraged
to do their best and improve.
o
The sport is competitive, but not cutthroat. A very important goal is to
have fun and keep a balanced attitude about winning and losing.
o
As a student-directed team, the girls have the opportunity to grow from
girls to young women as they coordinate, plan, teach, lead, encourage, and
challenge one another to be successful.
·
Spirit of the Game: Unlike other sports, there is a rating system from
0-5 that teams use to rate each other at the end of each game. The score
depends on how players respond before, during and after play with regard to
respectful behavior, good sportsmanship, and general behavior during the
intensity of the game. Scores may also be affected by the behavior along the
sidelines by coaching staff and spectators (parents).
o
See USA Ultimate link: 10 Rules for Ultimate Frisbee
·
There are both spring and fall seasons
·
Spring: Preseason starts in February, this week, and team gets on fields
as soon as possible in March (weather dependent). Tournaments are geographically
spread out: PA, NY, VT, and MA. The players’ commitment to the team is
extremely important due to the intense schedule and demands of the spring
tournaments. Season ends in late May, early June with Eastern Regionals and
States.
·
This season there is limited practice space for preseason. We are
looking for local gyms, like South Mountain and such to do our preseason. This
year we will be doing classes at the Parisi school to work on certain specific
skill like changing direction. It is $10 per class and we would need drivers to
get there. It would be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday over three weeks, and each
class is about an hour. Tuesdays
and Thursdays are regular workouts. The schedule, for Parisi, is as follows: March 3@5:00, March 5 @4:00, March
10 @4:00, March 12 @4:00, March 17 @4:00, March 19 @4:00
·
Regular
practice will hopefully start in March. It is Mon- Fri form 3:30pm- 6:00pm at
Waterlands
-Coaches
·
This year our primary coach is Gregory Woodruff, or woody, who has experience
with coaching the middle school team! Our secondary coach is Eric Cooney, who
has been playing ultimate for years! He played with the boys CHS team, and is a
college player as well as a profession player for the NJ Hammer Heads. He will
be helping through out the weeks as much as he can. Also, Sarah McNamara will
also provide some time. She has also coached the middle school team.
-Captains’ Goals for the Team
·
Captains want all players to finish the year with a love for the game.
·
They want the girls to have fun – this is a very important part of the
game.
·
They want all girls to feel like they are a part of the team, to be
connected.
-Captains Expectations of the Players
·
Girls are to respect their bodies during the season: no alcohol or drugs
throughout the season and no late nights before tournaments
·
Girls are to be respectful of each other.
·
Girls are to be committed to team, even through tough times (which there
will be!). They need to stick it out.
·
Players’ time on the field is based on attendance!
-Captains’ expectations of Parents
·
Support your girls. Come to at least one game or tournament. This makes
a difference for the girls.
·
Since the team has no official school support, parents need to help with
many things: fundraising, driving to
games and tournaments, chaperoning practices when necessary, etc.
·
Parents need to understand the “Spirit of the Game” and demonstrate
appropriate behavior on the sidelines. Cheering should be discreet, spectators
need to observe proper sideline space, and parents should be encouraging of
players but not overbearing. Spirit scores can be affected by a team’s sideline
behavior.
-Finances
·
Delphine Jones is our new team treasurer. Any questions email her at: deljones@hotmail.com
o
Dues: 400: (everything included) for the SPRING, check payable to:
CHS Girls Ultimate
o We are using the same uniforms as last year, so if
you don’t need a new uniform, the dues will cost $320.
o
Reimbursement policy: Parents can request reimbursements for gas and
hotel accommodations if they choose, but must have a full car and a full hotel
room with players. SAVE YOUR RECIPTS.
-Fundraising
·
Can drives are our main fundraiser, and we are having one on April 12@
Pathmark from 10am-4pm as well as a potential bake sale. We ask for 2 hours of time, whether that is
straight through or broken up into 2 sections! If you want to spend more time,
that’s fine too. If you missed on in the fall, you have to make up the time!
-Communication
·
If any player or parent has an issue, they need to send an email to the
captains at chs.sparklemotion@gmail.com.
A captain will reply within 24 hours.
·
The BlogSpot website is easy access to information, but you need to
follow the site! http://chs-sparklemotion.blogspot.com/
·
There will be a Parents board for easy communication between the parents
·
Also, once we get all of the parent emails, we will make a little parent
directory so that you can communicate with anyone on the team
·
Parisi school is located at 477 North Ave, Garwood, NJ 07027 (WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS)
